Best Tips for Making Fire Proof Homes
The following are some of the tips to make fire proof homes
Watch the Fireplace
A fireplace should be cleaned after every fire and it is most important
to check if a fire has been extinguished properly before you leave
the room or go to bed.
A fire should never be left unattended and
it is important to place a screen in front of the fireplace so that
sparks can't escape and cause a fire in the room. It is wise to put
a fire proof door in the room with the fireplace in it.

Electrical Heater
An electrical heater must never be placed near flammable materials
such as fabric curtains, a rug, and other flammable materials. Never
use an electrical heater to dry clothes and always turn the device
off when you leave a room or the house.
Electrical Issues
It is very important to keep the use of power bars at a minimum as
every power point can be a potential fire hazard. Outlets must never
be overloaded and remember to replace fuses properly. Call a certified
electrician if you are not sure how to replace a fuse or fix any other
electrical problem in the house.
Lighting Sources
Halogen lights are not the best choice for fire proof homes and of
course candles are always a fire hazard. Lights should be switched
off when you leave a room and candles must be extinguished. Make sure
to not place candles near any combustible materials.
Watch Your Smoking
Smoking in bed is a huge fire hazard and should be avoided at all
times. You could fall asleep or a spark from a cigarette or cigar
could cause your duvet or pillows to catch fire. Cigarettes should
be properly extinguished and it is wise to splash some water into
the ashtray before emptying its contents into a bin.
Supervise Children
Keep matches and lighters away from children and don’t let them
use these items unsupervised. Educate childre4n about the proper use
of lighters, matches and candles.
Take Pictures
Keeping receipts of appliances and items that you own and taking pictures
of these items will greatly help any insurance claims that you might
have to make in the unlikely event of a fire in your home. Take pictures
with a digital camera and store them on a cd-rom after which the cd-rom
can possibly be store at a relatives’ house. This will make
the whole painful process of filing for damages much easier should
you experience a fire.
Making a home fire proof goes a lot further than just fitting a fire
proof door. Fireproof wood doors, extinguishers and other precautions
can help minimise the risk but as said before, a home is never truly
fireproof.
