Gas Detector - Simple Looking Device That Could Prevent Dangerous Fire
Gas is a natural energy source that we use to cook with, heat the
house and to heat our water with. The main component of gas is methane,
which is extremely flammable.
Even though it happens rarely, gas leaks
in homes do occur. As natural gas does not smell, gas companies add
a smell to gas (described as rotten egg), to warn people of possible
leaks. Not every person will be able to detect this smell, and some
people have a limited sense of smell. An ammonia gas detector as well
as combustible gas detectors in your home will protect you and your
family from gas leaks and possible explosions.
Components of Gas Detectors
Gas leakage detectors are made up out of a few different components.
Generally a sensor has to be installed close to the gas source. If
there are several places in the building or home where gas is being
used you should install a second gas leak detector, the second component
is the control unit. With this unit the device is switched on and
off.
Types of Smoke Detectors
There are two main classifications of smoke detectors. They are ionization
chamber smoke detectors and photo electric smoke detectors.
The Purpose of Gas Detectors
The purposes of gas detectors are:
1. Natural gas detectors measure the amount of gas present in the
environment. If the detector is placed correctly near a source in
the home where a potential gas leak could occur, an alarm will go
off if a (minor) gas leak is detected.
2. The gas alarm will use an early warning signal to indicate the
leakage of gas in the home, using light and sound alerts. Some devices
only have a sound alarm. It is important to place the detector in
a place where you will be able to hear and see the device, if the
device is placed in a location where you cannot hear the alarm go
off, the gas alarm will be useless.
Types of Gas Detectors
There are several different types of gas detectors that can be used
in and around the home or office. Depending on your own preferences
and situation a choice can be made out of the following types of detectors:
Portable Gas Detectors
A portable gas detector is usually a small gas detection device than
is handheld. The device can be used to test the atmosphere in a small
confined space before entering (by placing the device in the space
before entering). This device can trace gas leaks and give off a warning
of the presence of gas leaks.
Transportable Gas Detectors
This type of gas detector is not small enough to be a handheld device
but the device is constructed so that it is easy to be picked up and
moved to another space. This type of device is mostly used to be put
in a space where maintenance is being carried out, so that builders
and other people working there are protected from gas leaks. This
type of portable gas detectors is often used in a space where the
detector that usually protects the space is being fixed or checked.
Fixed Gas Detectors
This type of gas detector is placed and fixed in a room or building
where it will permanently protect a property from gas leaks and will
give off early warnings of leaks. This type of detector is the best
type to use in a home close to gas sources, and most of the time a
device that will give off both sound and light signals is usually
the best.
